Periodontics in Grand Prairie, TX

At Carrier Family Dental, we strive to prevent the spread of periodontal disease. Periodontal disease weakens the gums and teeth when plaque and tarter buildup occurs. The dental specialty the pertains to preventing, diagnosing, and treating this disease is called periodontics.

Symptoms to Watch For

Periodontal disease begins with gingivitis, which is a mild gum inflammation, that gets progressively worse when left untreated. While some cases have no notable symptoms, the disease is usually accompanied by puffy, red, tender, or bleeding gums. Eventually the infection causes the gums and jawbone to recede, making the affected tooth become loose. Periodontal disease is actually the leading cause of tooth loss in adults living in developed countries.

Reasons for Treatment

There are several reasons why we may recommend periodontal treatment:

Deep Scaling

In areas where periodontal disease is advanced and there is significant regression of the jawbone, deep scaling may be necessary. Deep scaling is more intense cleaning, and can also require the removal of teeth that cannot be saved.

Oral Conscious Sedation

Oral sedation dentistry is a medical procedure involving the administration of oral sedatives to relax the patient during procedures which might be stressful. Many patients who have a lot of anxiety about visiting the dentist can find comfort in oral sedation procedures. Typically the sedation is not strong enough to put the patient to sleep, however after the procedure it is recommended you have someone available who can drive you back home.

Nitrous Oxide Sedation

Nicknamed "laughing gas," we can provide you with a nasal mask during your treatment to reduce sensitivity and enhace relaxation. Our team will closely monitor the dosage and make sure you feel comfortable. The effects for this option are not long lasting and typically resolve in as little as 5 minutes - so feel free to drive yourself!
